
Playing them does not affect the main game (that is, no bonus Far Far Pounds are awarded). There are 6 minigames in the game's story. The games features an online competitive multiplayer mode. Bad guys are pirates, demons, evil knights, wicked witches, tennis players, as well as Prince Charming himself. Felled enemies will drop fairy dust that will fill up the three-part special attack meter. After an enemy has sustained several hits, a finishing move can be used on him/her. Has fighting with fists and swords against various enemies such as pirates, guards, jocks, evil trees, and witches. In Shrek the Third, the play has to fight with fists and swords against multiple enemies, like pirates, guards, athletes, evil trees, and witches. Gold coins are worth 3 pounds and red coins are worth 10 pounds. Under certain circumstances, enemies can also give coins. In addition, there are coins of gold and red colors (called Far Far Pounds), often just lying around, but sometimes in smashables or treasure chests. Most contain fairy dust for use in special attacks, but a few contain coins and food. There are numerous boxes, barrels, and other smashables scattered around the levels. The difficulty setting multiplies the bonuses obtained. After completing a level, the player is awarded bonus Far Far Pounds, the game's currency used for purchasing items in the gift shop. The levels are highly linear, with side paths containing goodies for the completion of mission-style quests (three or five) and easter eggs such as an appearance by the (Penguins) from the Madagascar film.

The Gingerbread Man, King Harold, and Pinocchio are voiced by their movie actors. Puss in Boots is the only character that can double jump. There are 6 characters players can play as, all 5 of the movies' main characters, Shrek, Donkey, Puss in Boots, Arthur, Fiona, and one of the supporting characters, Sleeping Beauty. However, failing to perform the "Active Reload" correctly will cause the gun to become momentarily jammed while the player's character fixes it. Weapons are reloaded with a tap of the RB button, and a second tap within a given time (active reload) rewards the player with a damage bonus. Playable characters can carry two primary weapons, grenades, and a smaller, secondary weapon such as the Apex Pistol.

The game uses a number of weapon archetypes. Unlike the other games in the series, Shrek Sigma is a third-person shooter featuring Gears of War 's gameplay style which places emphasis on using cover to avoid taking damage while moving towards enemy forces. Upon release, Shrek Sigma received mixed reviews from critics it was praised for it's graphics, crossover characters, and competitive multiplayer, but was criticized for it's lack of own story. The soundtrack was composed by Winifred Phillips and produced by Winnie Waldron, with additional music by Geoff Zanelli. The game's plot is loosely based on the plot of Shrek the Third.
